The Original Thirteen ColoniesThe New York colony was one of the original thirteen colonies. The original colonies were divided in different areas: the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. The New York colony was classified as a Middle colony. The New York colony was originally occupied by Dutch settlers. While under Dutch control, it was called New Amsterdam. In 1664, the English took control over it and renamed it New York.
